The Last Book Of Swords Shieldbreaker Story Saberhagen Lost Swords 8 eBook Fred Saberhagen

As the last installment of the Book of Swords series, The Last Book of Swords: Sheildbreaker's Story definitely wraps up most, if not all, of the series' questions. Some of the questions include: Who is the Emperor? Who (or what) is Ardneh? What happened to Vilkata? Does Yambu find peace? These and many more.

The story follows Vilkata who was banished along with his demonic cohorts in The Sixth Book of Lost Swords: Mindsword's Story in his quest to seek revenge on the royal family of Tasavalta. Still in possession of the Mindsword, he returns to the palace upon confirming that Mark and Kristin are absent and converts most of the populace into worshipful followers. But, Stephen, the royal couple's youngest son narrowly escapes that fate with the help of Sheildbreaker (which nullifies the effects of the other swords) and Sightblinder (which helps him take advantage of the mindless followers or escape their notice).

Meanwhile, Baron Amintor, a long time foe of Prince Mark and his family, arrives in Sarykam following the direction of Coinspinner, the Sword of Luck, for his own reasons. Prince Mark and Kristin, in a nearby village, hold Woundhealer, and one of the Baron's allies holds Farslayer. The occupied armory holds Stonecutter and Townsaver, and even Soulcutter, the Mindsword's opposite, is located and nearly put into play. With so many swords concentrated in one place, chaos is the only possible result.

Quite a fantastic wrap to a an epic story spanning generations. Wonderful!

The Last Book Of Swords Shieldbreaker Story Saberhagen Lost Swords 8 eBook Fred Saberhagen Reviews

I was a faithful reader of Saberhagen since high school (back in the late 1980s) and it was with great anticipation that I purchased a hardback copy of this book (at full retail price). I looked forward to getting a satisfying conclusion to a series that spanned so much of my life. Throughout the original series and the lost swords series we always looked forward to finding out how certain swords would interact with certain other swords, and while we all looked forward to learning details about each sword's story, they were so intertwined that some books were more about another sword than the one the book was actually titled. (e.g. First Book of Lost Swords was mostly about Dragonslicer). Anyway, as any reader knows, Sheildbreaker can destroy the other swords (the reason we got 8 books and not 12).

Saberhagen's writing is generally very up and down across all of his various series. Some books are really amazing cover to cover (Changeling Earth through Coinspinner's Story), some are weird and nonsensical (Dominion), some are rich and detailed but ultimately abrupt and unsatisfying (Dancing Bears, Mask of the Sun, Frankenstein Papers, Pyramids),

Sometimes they feel bored and maybe spiteful. Or you imagine that someone was holding a gun and forcing him to write the book Stephen-King-Misery-Style.

Sheildbreaker's Story fits that last type. For the penultimate story of 14 books spanning a decade, but it read like a hot soup blender accident. I won't go into detail and "ruin" it for you, but it's simply LAZY. The whole things feels "phoned in" and there's no depth of emotion or sadness when a long-developed character dies and is forgotten in the narrow space of a paragraph. Yes, we do finally get the answer to one big mystery posed 8 books ago, but nobody cares by that point.

I have to agree with all of the other negatives. If you love this series, you're going to be disappointed. But like a flu shot, you've got to go through with it or you'll get sick (wondering how it ended).

What's annoying is that Ardneh's Sword, written over a decade later, bridges the gap between the Empire of the East and the First Book of swords. By comparison, it's a much better book about this world that answers more questions than Sheildbreaker's Story. I highly recommend it.
If you loved the series please, please do not read the last book it will leave you totally disappointed to say the least!
I bought it to complete the rest of my series. If you like quest stories than I recommend this series.
A++++
Found the end very interesting.
Although most loose ends of the series of 11 books are tied off. It felt as if the author was in a hurry to just end it all after pulling the reader along through a great series of stories. Questions still remain.
If you enjoyed the rest of the series, stop and don't read this book. Yes, you will be left wondering what happens to the rest of the swords, who is the Emperor, what happens to Mark and the rest, but live with the curiosity. This book goes beyond anticlimactic, it is just awful. The ending and the explanation of the Emperor is so...I can't even find words for how disappointing it is.
I'm left wondering if Saberhagen didn't outgrow the series and quickly wrote Shieldbreaker's story to bring the series to a close so he could move on to other endeavors. I can not believe that he actually thought that this ending would satisfy his readers.
I can not stress enough how thoroughly disappointing and frustrating the ending of this book is. Saberhagen should personally apologize to everyone who read this book
