I love Southern novels and I love American history. Put the two loves together, and I really, really love Bricks Without Straw by Albion Tourgée. Situated in Horsford County (AKA Guilford County), N.C., after the Civil War, the historical novel weaves a story about the failed Reconstruction largely through the eyes and narrative of African American freedmen and one Southern man whose assumptions about race relations are tried and found lacking. The characters and events are based on real people and events, and the text is richly end-noted to steep the reader in the cultural contexts of passages as needed. It will present a story of the Reconstruction experiment that is quite different from the familiar Southern take that it was nothing more than opportunistic carpetbaggers and scalawags preying upon Southerners in their time of need.I rather expected a book that would be challenging to read, either because its language would be too quaint for easy comprehension, or its characterizations of African Americans would be stereotypical and condescending, traits that have interfered with my ability to enjoy some of Mark Twain's novels written at the same time. But I was wrong on both counts. I found Tourgée's writing style to be very accessible and his depiction of the freedmen to be realistic and respectful. In fact, I was amazed at how many of Tourgée's notions about the ways an elite minority protects its advantaged positions are spot on for our times as well.
My husband and I read books aloud to each other, and this one, though longer than most of our choices, worked well. The heavy dialect of some of the freedmen is presented phonetically, and there were many times I couldn't decipher what the character was saying until I sounded out the words and "heard" them. This would make a great book on tape!

The point of buying this version instead of the free public domain version is to benefit from Karcher's marvelous introduction and endnotes. Unfortunately the endnotes are not hyperlinked to their corresponding numbers in the main text, making them all but impossible to find in the kindle version (it's much harder to flip back and forth in an e-book than a paper book).
For those of us living in the 21st century, Albion Tourgée's 1880 Bricks Without Straw is an astonishingly timely and powerful novel. Those familiar with the novel recognize it as a masterpiece of American literature, a work that probes at least as deep into the culture of our nation as Twain's Huckleberry Finn and Crane's Red Badge of Courage. And Carolyn Karcher's handsome and affordable new edition, with her brilliant historical and critical introduction, is truly a treasure.
Tourgée, an Ohio lawyer who was twice badly wounded in the Civil War, went to North Carolina after the war as a judge dedicated to help build a society truly free from slavery and its racist heritage. While there, he participated with the newly-freed slaves in building what might have been the foundation of just such a society. But then, with the emergence of waves of reactionary terrorism, he watched the destruction of their achievements and the creation, instead, of the profoundly racist culture and political economy that we still find ourselves struggling against. Indeed, what makes the novel exceptionally timely today is its heart-wrenching dramatization of how a racist reaction was able to devastate the hopes for true freedom and equality.
In her introduction, Karcher uses her extraordinarily deep and wide historical research to give us a three-dimensional context for the events that take place in the novel. She also gives us wonderful insights into the novel's achievement as fiction, with its fully-fleshed, living characters--black and white. She very convincingly shows that Bricks Without Straw is perhaps the single best source we have into Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction America while also being a terrifically engaging novel.
Great fiction based on fact and the fine talents of Albion W Tourgee. A fine introduction by Carolyn L. Karcher recognizing that the author deserves greater credit for his contribution to advance former slaves through education and being freemen. It, also, reveals how the southern Democrats operated with the "Klan" to suppress voting by former slaves and enacted legislation to keep them subservient to their self identified white "superiors."
I found the black part hard to understand..
